Does your teen driver know the rules of the road? No matter how well they were taught or how much they’ve been told, driving is still so new. Ultimately, the best way to get better is to practice. But whenever they do, they should take a few precautions.

The facts

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens. It’s a startling statistic — especially when most of these accidents could’ve been prevented.

For drivers between the ages of 16 and 19, the risk of getting into a car accident is high. Higher than any other age group. In fact, compared to older drivers, they’re nearly three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash.

The pledge

To keep your teen driver as safe as possible, consider a contract. Set aside a time to set some ground rules. Review them with your child, then sign off on them together.
