Protection classes are a ranking by ISO of the public fire protection capabilities within a given region. Policyholders who reside within communities with better public protection generally pay lower insurance premiums. To ensure policies are properly priced in relation to their location, it is necessary each risk is assigned with the correct Protection Class.
Determining an accurate location of the risk property ensures we are able to assign the correct Protection Class. Specifically, the property must be located within the boundaries of a community or classified area to be eligible for that area’s assigned protection class.
It is important to note, mailing addresses are not necessarily an accurate means toward determining the Protection Class. The actual location of the home is the key. If a home is inside city limits, the Protection Class will be based on that city. If the home is outside city limits, then it is most likely located in a township. If your insured is unsure where their home is located, please take the time to look it up to ensure the accurate Protection Class is assigned.
