It has long been our position at Frankenmuth Insurance to discourage stacking of youthful drivers on a single automobile within a multi vehicle household. The reason for this is it results in having inadequate premium for the second youthful driver exposure rated on the policy. We had previously given our Underwriters authority to make exceptions if a situation warranted. Further, we have not made any endorsement rules or edits within iBIS related to this action, since we expect agents will correctly assign youthful operators within the household to separate vehicles.
Recent trends have indicated exceptions are increasingly being requested making it more the rule than the exception to stack these drivers on a vehicle. Additionally, we have discovered the lack of rules/edits in iBIS has been allowing the iBIS system to be manipulated to allow the stacking of these drivers much more frequently than would be reasonably expected.
It is necessary to obtain adequate premium for our exposure, and the stacking of youths on a single vehicle does not allow us to do so. In an effort to ensure adequate premium for these exposures, we are taking a harder line on these requests. We will not be making as many exceptions as we have in the recent past. Likewise, if an endorsement fires to Underwriting, we are going to be double checking the driver assignment, making sure the agency correctly assigned the youthful operators to vehicles in the household. While driver assignments can be confusing, our Personal Lines manual will clarify our position with our next product review.
We appreciate your loyalty to Frankenmuth Insurance. Further, we appreciate your understanding and cooperation in supporting this effort.
