When a personal lines policy cancels for non-pay, underwriting must be called to determine if an exception will be made to rewrite the policy. We completely re-underwrite the risk, looking specifically at loss history, MVR records, and pay history.  If we choose to rewrite the policy and are contacted the day the policy cancels, we can rewrite it without a lapse in coverage.

If, however, we get the call the day after the policy cancels, but within 10 days for an auto policy and 30 days for a homeowner’s policy, we can offer a rewrite with lapse.   If the rewrite is approved, the underwriter will email you details on the payment due and the forms needed.

In either case, coverage isn’t bound until the agency collects payment and the insured signs the form.
