A key component of audit processing is classification of the risk. Classification changes at audit can impact the final premium and your agency’s profitability. To assist you, we have provided these helpful tools to assigning classification.
Key factors when codes 0042 and 97047 Landscape Gardening would apply:
1. Design, preparing the ground; tilling and fertilizing, planting shrubs, trees, seed and sod
a. Residential and Commercial properties
b. Beautification of Median Strips and Roadsides
c. Finishing Operations relative to street and road construction
d. Artificial Turf Installation (after ground surface has been installed)
2. Spreading mulch
3. Installation of flower beds
4. When part of an overall large landscaping project the installation of the following are also included in code 97047, at the same time would be otherwise, classified for the Workers’ Compensation (see table below for applicable Workers’ Compensation classifications)
a. Walkways
b. Silt Fencing
c. Landscape lighting
d. Decorative Fencing
e. Paving Stones
f. Railroad ties (used as borders of the landscaping project)
5. Growing flowers, bushes, and sod used in their own landscaping operations
6. Interior Landscaping
When part of an overall landscaping project the following operations would be contemplated in code 97047 Landscape Gardening; however, are assigned to another classification when performed by specialty contractors:

A payroll breakdown must be kept in order for multiple classes to apply, (if not a NPD class). Otherwise, the exposure will be placed in the higher rated applicable classification. (Percentages are not acceptable).
* Codes 8227 Contractors Permanent yard and 5606 Contractors Executive Supervisor are not applicable in Michigan as code 0042 Landscaping is not considered a construction classification.
